Ditch Diet Culture, Create Hormonal Stability, and Build Healthy Habits in 2025

As the New Year unfolds, many women are making resolutions to lose weight or eat healthier. I champion that! However, too often, the go-to solution is to start another restrictive diet. While dieting might provide short-term results, it is rarely sustainable, especially for women in midlife experiencing the hormonal shifts of menopause. Strict diets often clash with your body’s natural processes, disrupting hormones and leaving you feeling worse instead of better.

So, how do we ditch the diet and embrace a healthier, more sustainable way of living? The answer lies in three simple yet powerful steps: Eat Real Food, Make Good Decisions, and Be Accountable. These three pillars are the foundation of a healthy lifestyle and the premise of my best-selling book, Healthy Living, Happy Life. Let’s dive into why dieting fails and how these steps can lead to lifelong vitality.

Why Diets Don’t Work—Especially in Midlife

Diets are often like the shiny objects we must have, thinking they will be the thing that will make us happy, help us to lose weight, feel better, etc. In reality, they are just quick-fix bandages. They may promise rapid weight loss, but they come at a cost: hormonal imbalances, metabolic slowdowns, and an unhealthy relationship with food. For women in midlife (45-65), these side effects are compounded by fluctuating estrogen and progesterone levels, which already affect metabolism, energy, and mood.

Restrictive eating patterns can cause the body to go into “survival mode,” slowing metabolism and causing more hormonal fluctuations that lead to weight gain once you return to regular eating habits. Moreover, diets often demonize entire food groups, creating a cycle of guilt and deprivation. It’s time to break free.

Step 1: Eat Real Food

Here’s the secret to sustainable health: choose foods that fuel your body and mind. Real food—think vibrant fruits, crunchy vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats—provides the nutrients your body craves. Unlike the processed, sugar-laden options typical of the Standard American Diet (SAD) that disrupt hormonal balance, real foods:

  • Stabilize blood sugar, reducing mood swings.
  • Support hormonal balance.
  • Provide lasting energy without the crash.

Imagine your plate as a canvas painted with colors from nature. (I am getting hungry as I write this.) The more variety, the more nutrients you’re feeding your body. Your hormones will thank you, and so will your taste buds.

Step 2: Make Good Decisions

Building healthy habits is all about small, intentional choices that add up over time. Here are some tips to guide you:

  • Listen to your hunger cues. These are hormonal cues. Are you eating because you’re hungry or because you’re stressed or bored? Pause and assess.
  • Plan your meals. A little preparation goes a long way in avoiding last-minute unhealthy choices. Think meal prepping or stocking your pantry with wholesome staples.
  • Choose moderation. If you crave a slice of cake, enjoy it without guilt, but make your next meal nutrient-packed. Balance is the key. My secret to dessert is the three-bite rule.  Savor each bite and truly taste what you are eating.  By the third bite, you will have gotten so much pleasure from the dessert, and after that, you will be eating it because it’s there, not because you’re craving it.  You’ve satisfied that craving. Every decision is an opportunity to support your body and feel your best.

Step 3: Be Accountable

Accountability is the glue that turns good intentions into results. This doesn’t mean punishing yourself for slip-ups; it’s about acknowledging where you are and taking proactive steps toward where you want to be. Here’s how to stay accountable:

  • Track your progress. Use a journal or an app to note how you feel after meals, your energy levels, and your wins (big or small).
  • Find a support system. Connecting with others makes the journey more enjoyable, whether it’s a coach like me, a friend, or an online group.
  • Celebrate your successes. Did you eat more vegetables today? High-five yourself! Progress deserves recognition.

Why This Approach Works for Midlife Women

When you stop chasing quick fixes and embrace a lifestyle of real food, mindful decisions, and accountability, you gain more than just a healthy body. You also reclaim your energy, confidence, and joy.

Your body’s needs are unique in midlife, and each of us is a bit different. Honoring those needs rather than fighting them is essential. A nourishing meal that stabilizes your blood sugar is not just food; it’s fuel for your mind, body, and spirit. A brisk walk isn’t just exercise; it’s a celebration of what your body can do.  Small steps create momentum, and we all know that a body in motion stays in motion.

The Risks of Not Changing

If you continue the dieting cycle, you risk more than just frustration. Dieting takes a toll on your physical and mental health, leading to fatigue, hormonal imbalances, and feelings of failure. It can also affect your pocketbook regarding doctor visits and medication, which can often be avoided.  The cost of inaction is too high when the alternative—building sustainable habits—offers a path to a vibrant and joyful life. Live better, longer, and still enjoy dessert.
