What My 81-Year-Old Aunt and 83-Year-Old Friend Taught Me About Healthspan
As the Menopause Mentor and Longevity Concierge, I think about quality of life a lot.
Not just how long we live—but how well we live.
Recently, I had two experiences that brought this concept home in a powerful way.
The First Woman: My Aunt
Last week, I visited my 81-year-old aunt in England. She’s been blind since childhood, and now, she’s almost entirely immobile. She doesn’t hear well. She refuses a hearing aid. She doesn’t move without assistance—and most days, she moves only from her bed to a chair.
Her life now is a series of medications, nurse visits, and waiting.
And it broke my heart. Not because of tragedy or illness… but because her decline was preventable.
She didn’t eat well. Didn’t move her body. Didn’t stay socially connected.
And over the years, those small, daily choices became her new normal. Until there was no more freedom left.
The Second Woman: My Friend
Fast forward a week—I’m having coffee with a dear friend who’s 83. And she’s thriving.
She:
- Mows her own lawn
- Cleans her entire (very large!) house
- Walks over 10,000 steps every day
- Has a tight-knit group of friends she visits regularly
- Plays competitive bridge every Sunday—without fail
- And she takes just one medication for something minor
She’s sharp, present, glowing with energy. She’s not just getting through life—she’s living it.
And the difference between these two women isn’t luck.
It’s lifestyle. Live well, age well.
What the Research Says
We can’t control everything, of course. Our bodies age. Immune systems weaken. Genetics play a role.
But the data is clear: “A healthy lifestyle can increase life expectancy and compress years of disability into a shorter period at the end of life.” Don’t just take it from me, read the full study here.
This means fewer years dependent on others. Fewer medications. Fewer limitations.
More joy. More movement. More autonomy. More life.
What This Means for You (Yes, You)
If you’re in your 40s, 50s, or 60s, here’s the truth:
Your future is being shaped by what you’re doing right now.
If you’ve been telling yourself:
- “It’s too late.”
- “I’ve already done too much damage.”
- “I’m too tired to make changes…”
I want to gently (but firmly) say:
You’re wrong. And I say that with love.
It’s not too late.
You don’t need to do everything.
But, you just need to start somewhere.
How to Begin Right Now:
- Walk a little more today than you did yesterday.
Call a friend and plan a visit—or go play a game you love.
Choose a meal that fuels you instead of drains you.
Commit to one small habit you can actually stick to.
Say yes to your health. Out loud.
And if you’re tired of going it alone or unsure where to start—this is what I’m here for.
